WHS Swimmers Dominate At McDowell PDF Print

The Watauga High boy's and girl's swimming team came off the Christmas break in fine fashion.

The Pioneers competing in their first meet in a little less than a month simply waltzed their way to five victories in Marion, N.C.

The WHS girls blasted McDowell, 69-23, and Erwin, 77-10, but lost to Thomas Jefferson, 47-46. The WHS girls also won three events.

Anne Taylor won the 50-meter freestyle in 26.45 seconds. Dakota Wilson finished second in 28.79. Taylor also turned in a second-place finish in the girl's 100-meter butterfly (1:04.54).

Julianna Silver won the girl's 500-meter freestyle in 6:02.59. She also had a second-place finish in the girl's 100-meter breaststroke (1:17.55).

The Pioneers also won the girl's 200-meter freestyle relay (Taylor, Silver, Wilson and Kimberly Vines) finished first in 1:55.60.

Overall, the WHS girls had eight second place finishes.

The WHS boys made it a clean sweep by knocking off McDowell, 53-34, Erwin, 66-19, and Thomas Jefferson, 61-26.

The Pioneers simply dominated as they won seven events. Nick Woody and Reed Conner led the way by winning two individual events apiece.

Woody won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.44 and the 200 freestyle in 2:02.42; Conner won the 50 freestyle in 24.24 and the 100 freestyle in 55.00. Those two also teamed up on WHS' 400 freestyle relay team, which crossed the finish line in 3:53.40.

They were joined by Ben Watson and Joel Brown on that relay squad. Watson also won the boy's 500 freestyle in 6:02.59. And that same quartet teamed up and led WHS to victory in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.24).

"The best way to describe this meet was rusty," said WHS coach David Gragg. "Having not swam a meet in three weeks nor practicing as a team in about that long, the time away from the pool showed. Some swimmers were able to post some fast times, but as a whole, the team really looked slow even in winning. Reed Conner and Nick Woody led the men with two individual victories and teamed to win two relays. Anne Taylor and Julianna Silver each won an event and placed second in another to pace the women.

We will have to take the next week to get ourselves ready for the conference meet. The Christmas holidays and bad weather have really interfered with training this year more than others. It is going to take work by the athletes to be ready in two weeks."

The Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championships will be held Thursday, January 23 at the Hickory YMCA.
