The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (9-3, 4-3) won its fourth straight game, 71-61, over Wingate (9-2, 5-2) Wednesday night in a South Atlantic
Conference game at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
L-R junior guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) finished with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds while senior forward Nneka Awuruonye (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points off the bench in the victory.
Wingate, which lost its second straight game after winning its first nine contests to start the year, was paced by Amber Neely (Charlotte, N.C.) with a team-high 19 points in the setback.
Trailing by a 33-32 score at halftime, Lenoir-Rhyne took control at the start of the second half with a 9-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Charles with 17:13 left in the game and the Bears remained in front the rest of the way.
Freshman forward Morgan Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore guard Jordan Hiatt (Mount Airy, N.C.) added 10 points each for the Bears, who held a 44-35 advantage in rebounding and limited the Bulldogs to just 35 percent (21-of-60) shooting in the game.
Lenoir-Rhyne also connected on 24-of-33 free throw attempts in the contest and avenged an earlier loss to Wingate in November.
Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) also scored 14 points for the Bulldogs, who fell out of first place in the league standings.
In the next round of South Atlantic Conference games on Saturday, Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Tusculum on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., while Wingate travels to Harrogate, Tenn., to face Lincoln Memorial beginning at 5:30 p.m.
