Mountaineers Down Seahawks, 54-47 PDF Print

Appalachian State University women's basketball notched its third win of the 2013-14 season over UNCW on Tuesday afternoon with a score of 54-47.

 

Katie Mallow converted in the second half to help the Mountaineers (3-8, 0-1 SoCon) overcome a four-point deficiency and win their last non-conference game over the Seahawks (1-12, 0-0) with eight minutes left.

 

Appalachian started the game strong, beginning with a 13-4 lead. The Seahawks fought right back, tying the game at 13-13 with 8:48 left in the half. Mallow would hit a jumper with seven seconds left in the half to put the Mountaineers up 24-15 at halftime.

 

The Mountaineers 41.7 percent (10-24) in the first half, with Mallow leading the team with seven points.

 

UNCW shot 25 percent (7-28) from the floor during the first, while Kelva Atkins scored seven points to lead the team.

 

The Mountaineers continued to control the second half until 12:50 left to play when the Seahawks would go on a 18-4 run to lead the game 38-36 with 8:28 to play.

 

The Apps would return from a media timeout and immediately regain their composure as Mallow hit a three to begin a 14-2 run for the Mountaineers. The game would be far from over as the Seahawks pulled within three with 2:06 to play, but App State continued to find points, taking a 54-47 victory from UNCW.

 

KeKe Cooper led the Mountaineers with 14 points and led the team in rebounds, notching eight on the game. Mallow followed, recording 13 points and two key three-pointers in the second half.

 

Maryah Sydnor continued her streak of double-figures scoring with 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.

 

The Apps shots 43.8 percent from the floor on the game and grabbed 43 rebounds.

 

UNC Wilmington's Atkins led the team in scoring with 18 points, shooting 7-15 from the floor. Naqaiyyah Teague led with a game-high nine rebounds. The Seahawks had a 35.7 field goal percentage while tallying 26 rebounds on the game.

 

The Mountaineers will travel to Greenville, S.C. to play conference opponent Furman on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. before hitting the road to play SoCon foe Wofford on Jan. 6.
