It wasn't even close.

The Watauga High girl's swimming team simply waltzed its way past Patton and Freedom in a tri-match Wednesday night in Morganton.

The WHS girls defeated Freedom, 124-79, and they blasted Patton 135-66. WHS won eight events on the night, and two girls, Anne Taylor, who was the Five Guys Burgers and Fries Athlete of the Week last week, and Julianna Silver combined to win six events.

Taylor captured the 200-meter freestyle in 2:10.31 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:05.47. Silver won the 500-meter freestyle in 5:56.54 and the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:19.54.

Taylor and Silver also teamed up on the 200-meter medley relay, which finished first in 2:09.09; and the 400-meter freestyle relay that finished first in 4:23.01.

Taylor and Silver were joined by Cheyenne Hayler and Kimberly Vines in the 400 relay; they were joined by Vines and Dakota Wilson in the 200 medley.

Vines won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:10.60; Wilson won the 50-meter freestyle in 28.51.

The Pioneers also produced 23 top-five finishes.

"Julianna Silver and Anne Taylor are both swimming on the local club team as well and competed in a tough meet this past weekend," said WHS coach David Gragg. "Dakota had two impressive individual swims. Cheyenne and first year swimmer, Michala McCune, placed well in their events. Lucy Edy and Brittany Burwell has strong swims all evening. Hopefully they can use this meet as a springboard to a good few weeks before the conference meet."

The WHS boys defeated Patton, 120-60, but lost to Freedom, 121-85. But the Pioneers did win five events.

Reed Conner led the way winning three of those events, the 500 freestyle (5:40.23), the 100 breaststroke (1:10.21), and he was a member of WHS' 400 freestyle relay team that finished first in (3:44.63).

He was joined on that relay team by Nick Woody, who finished first in the 100 freestyle, (55.50), Ben Watson, who won the 200 freestyle (2:10.76), and Joel Brown.

"The boys faced a strong Freedom team that should challenge for the conference title.," Gragg said. "Reed Conner led the way winning two individual events. Nick Woody and Ben Watson joined him as event champions. They boys are still swimming events to see where we will best compete in a few weeks. The lineup is continuously changing to see what works best. In a planning error on my part, Ben Watson swam three consecutive events in a row and was able to establish personal best times in both of this individual swims.

"With a few weeks off for the Christmas holidays, we hopefully can get rested and recovered in order to have a strong meet in Marion in January. The conference meet will on be roughly five weeks away."

The Pioneers next meet will be Wednesday, January 8 in Marion, N.C. McDowell will be the host school. Erwin and Thomas Jefferson round out the four-team  field.
