week, the SoCon office announced on Wednesday.
On Sunday, Cottrell earned his 14th win of the season defeating Tywan Claxton at 149 pounds by decision 6-4. Claxton was previously ranked 13th according to InterMat.
The Spencer, W.Va. native has been dominant in his start to the 2013-14 season. Cottrell is nearly perfect this season at 14-1, including a flawless 5-0 record in dual matches.
“Dylan continues to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with at 149 on the national stage,” said head coach JohnMark Bentley. “He continues to improve in all positions.”
Cottrell finds himself nationally ranked in his weight class. The redshirt freshman is ranked 10th in the Amateur News Wrestling poll, 11th on WrestlingReport.com and 16th on InterMat’s recent ranking.
Prior to Sunday, Cottrell won his first 11 matches of the season, which included the 149-pound title at the Roadrunner Open and also placed third at the Keystone Classic. Cottrell’s dominance has included three pins and three technical falls in six of his wins.
Cottrell is Appalachian State’s first repeat winner of the SoCon Wrestler-of-the-Week award since Austin Trotman accomplished the feat during the 2011-12 campaign. The Mountaineers have been named SoCon Wrestler of the Week 31 times since 2000-01.
