The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (5-3, 2-3) suffered an 80-77 loss to Carson-Newman (7-3, 5-0) Saturday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.
The Lady Eagles' Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) led all scorers with 27 points including 20 before halftime and hit five treys as Carson-Newman remained alone atop the South Atlantic Conference standings.
Freshman forward Morgan Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with a team-high 17 points and was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bears in the losing effort.
Burstrom's performance in the first half, which included four three-pointers, helped the Eagles dig out of an 8-0 deficit to start the contest and enter halftime with a 46-45 advantage.
Carson-Newman would never trail again in the game and broke a 75-all tie with a lay-up by Chante Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) with 1:26 left which proved to be the game-winner. Markus finished with 11 points while Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) scored 12 points off the bench and Carson-Newman held a 48-35 advantage on the boards in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior guards Alexis Katt (Euharlee, Ga.) and Krystal Patton (Chilhowie, Va.) and junior guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) all scored 10 points each but the Bears shot just 39 percent (27-of-70) from the floor in the loss. The Bears have also lost three of their last four contests.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Lander in the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic in Morrow, Ga., on Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Carson-Newman, meanwhile, returns home to take on Kentucky Wesleyan on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
