The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (5-2, 4-1) used a strong second half to defeat Carson-Newman (6-2, 3-2), 68-56, Saturday night in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial
L-R senior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.), the team's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 22 points while senior guard Jarvis Perry (Willingboro, N.J) added 16 points and both players connected on four treys in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne led by as many as 20 points in the second half on a lay-up by McClure for a 60-40 advantage with 11:36 left and the Bears cruised the rest of the way for the win.
Carson-Newman's Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Josh Rogers (Bristol, United Kingdom) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the way but the Eagles saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Lenoir-Rhyne finished with a season-high 11 three-pointers while Perry added six assists and five rebounds in the victory. The Bears also improved to 3-0 at home this year and moved into a second-place tie in the South Atlantic Conference standings.
The Eagles shot just 28 percent (five-of-18) from behind the three-point line and turned the ball over 12 times compared to the Bears' five turnovers in the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Greenwood, S.C., to take on Georgia College in the Finis Horne Holiday Classic next Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m. Carson-Newman returns home to host Limestone on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., in Jefferson City, Tenn.
