Bobcats Ground Wasps, 78-64 PDF Print

Darryl Bond (Nashville, Tenn.) recorded a double-double with game-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lees-McRae College men's basketball team

to a 78-64 victory over Emory & Henry College in non-conference play on Tuesday evening in Williams Gymnasium.


Lees-McRae (5-5) held Emory & Henry (2-6) to a field goal percentage of 37.3 percent on the night, including a 29 percent clip in the first half, while converting 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) attempts at the charity stripe. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 45-43 margin, including a 13-12 advantage on the offensive boards, while converting 20 Wasp miscues into 24 points.


Bond paced the Bobcats with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, as Raul Tutton (Memphis, Tenn.), Mike Chambers (Winston-Salem, N.C.), and Josh Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) each added eight points. Chambers chipped in seven boards and a game-high four assists, while Darius Malbon (Hickory, N.C.) tallied seven points and four rebounds off the bench.


Marquise Coleman led the way for Emory & Henry with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Tyler Mullins and Charles Smith added nine and eight points, respectively. Mullins and Smith each pulled down five boards, as Onell Gibson dished out a team-high four assists.


The Bobcats got off to a strong start in the first half, opening the game with a 13-4 run that was capped by a triple from Rishad Felton(Hendersonville, N.C.) at the 15:09 mark. After Coleman countered with a three-point play to trim the margin to 13-7, Lees-McRae answered with a 19-8 surge, pushing the advantage to 32-15 following a fast-break alley-oop dunk from Bond to Moore with 6:10 left on the clock.


Emory & Henry would end the period with a 10-7 spurt, closing the gap to 39-25 on a three-point play by Hamilton at the 2:00 mark. The Bobcats regained the momentum in the early moments of the second half, opening the period with a 15-7 run to stretch the lead to 54-32 following back-to-back throw downs by Bond with 14:20 to play.


Bond and the Bobcats would push the margin to as many as 28 points down the stretch, maintaining the double-double lead throughout the remainder of the game en route to their second straight win.


Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday when the Bobcats travel to Montreat, N.C. to take on Montreat College in non-conference play at 7:30 p.m.
