Free safety Alex Gray, a red-shirt freshman on the Appalachian State University football team, was charged last Thursday with assault on a female. He has been
suspended from all team activities indefinitely, head coach Scott Satterfield said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gray, who is 20-years-old, and a native of Suwanee, Ga., was charged on December 5 after he assaulted a 21-year-old woman earlier that day that required medical attention, according to police reports. According to the report, Gray was accused of "assaulting his girlfriend with closed fist."
Gray, who met with a Boone police officer at the Watauga County Magistrate's Office, was released with a written promise to appear in court Jan. 21, 2014.
Gray started all 12 games for the Mountaineers this past season at free safety. He was second on the team with 73 tackles.
Gray is the third ASU football player to face criminal charges dating back to 2012. Wide receiver Sean Price was dismissed from the team in October after his arrest on several charges, which included felony assault by strangulation, according to police.
Senior linebacker John Rizor was dismissed from the team in July 2012 after he was charged with misdemeanor assault.
