Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) and Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) each posted a double-double to lead the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team to a 70-56 win over Converse College in their Conference Carolinas opener on Tuesday evening.

Lees-McRae (4-5, 1-0 CC) held Converse (0-5, 0-1 CC) to a field goal percentage of 32.8 percent, including a 23.5 percent clip in the first half, while converting 19 Valkyrie turnovers into 12 points. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 49-42 margin, including a 14-11 advantage on the offensive boards, and scored 17 second-chance points in the contest.

Belcher led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and added a contest-best 11 rebounds to post her second double-double of the season. Munson recorded a double-double of her own with 16 points and 10 boards, while Kabrina Truesdale (Wilmington, N.C.) chipped in nine points and a game-high three assists.

Shanice Bruster paced the Valkyries with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, knocking down a pair of three-pointers, as Margo Dill and Brooke Garrison added nine and eight points, respectively. Avery Winchester chipped in a team-high seven rebounds.

Converse scored the game's first basket for its first and only lead of the contest, as Lees-McRae quickly answered with a 21-8 surge, opening a 21-10 margin following a Kasey Haynes (Mooresville, N.C.) lay-in at the 8:23 mark. Lees-McRae would push the advantage to 36-20 with a 15-10 run, capping the spurt with six straight points from Belcher and taking a 37-24 lead into the break.

The Bobcats carried the momentum into the second half, opening its largest lead of the game at 48-26 on a bucket by Belcher at the 16:21 mark. Lees-McRae would hold on from there, weathering a late comeback attempt by the Valkyries en route to the 70-56 victory.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Bristol, Tenn. to take on King University in league play at 5:30 p.m.
