The Watauga High junior varsity boy's basketball team marched its way to the championship game of the Miller's Insurance/Dr. Pepper Invitational in West Jefferson, N.C., Friday night by knocking off West

WIlkes 45-31 in the opening round.



The Pioneers (2-0), despite a sluggish first half, finally came to life in the second half. Leading 22-16, the Pioneers took advantage of their size inside and extended their lead to 11 points after three quarters.


Zach Valet led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Nick Sherman toss in nine; Levi Wilcox had eight points.


"West came out in a zone that gave us fits for the whole half," WHS JV coach Jerry Moretz said. "They knew we wanted an up tempo game and did a really good job of controlling the tempo in the first half. They also shot well from three-point land to help keep them close. Thankfully, our defense provided us with enough of a lift to keep the lead in the second half."


WHS will play Ashe County who defeated Avery in Friday's second game. The Pioneers are looking for their third title in a row.


"This will be a tough match up against a team that is averaging 60 or more points a game," Moretz said. "We will definitely have to tighten down on the defensive end and execute better on the offensive end of the floor. "


Saturday's championship game begins at 7 p.m.
