Sophomore Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) paced the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team with a game- and career-high 24 points, as Wayne State College opened the afternoon with an 18-2 run en route to a 98-67 victory on Thursday in the University of Alaska Fairbanks' North Star Invitational.
Wayne State (6-0) connected on at least 55 percent of its shots in each half, including a 59 percent clip in the final 20 minutes, while holding Lees-McRae (2-4) to a field goal percentage of 40.9 percent in the contest. The Wildcats edged the Bobcats by a 35-34 margin on the glass, as Lees-McRae won the battle on the offensive boards, 14-7. Wayne State converted 22 Bobcat miscues into 35 points on the afternoon.
Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with a game- and career-high 24 points, knocking down 11-of-17 attempts from the floor while grabbing nine rebounds. Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) added a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 boards, while recording a contest-best four steals.
Jordan Spencer led the way for Wayne State with a double-double, tallying 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Ashton Iossi and Ellen Hansen added 21 and 17 points, respectively. Addy Roller dished out a game-high seven assists, as Kara Powell chipped in a contest-best four blocks.
Wayne State got off to a strong start in the first half, opening the period with an 18-2 surge that was capped by a Hansen jumper at the 14:07 mark. The Wildcats would push the lead to 41-14 before the Bobcats responded with a 20-4 run, closing the gap to 45-34 following back-to-back jumpers by Munson with 1:15 left in the half.
The Wildcats built on a 50-34 halftime lead in the early moments of the second half, stretching the advantage to 62-37 on a Hansen triple with 16:10 to play. Lees-McRae kept fighting through the remainder of the game, battling for every ball and outscoring the Wildcats in the paint during the final 20 minutes. The Bobcats finished the game strong, closing the contest with an 11-6 spurt over the last three and a half minutes, and capping the night with a late bucket by Munson.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday when the Bobcats take the floor against host Alaska Fairbanks at 4 p.m. Alaska Standard Time on the second day of the North Star Invitational.
