A steady barrage of three-pointers was too much to overcome as Appalachian State University women's basketball dropped its Southern Conference opener, 71-63, to archrival Western Carolina on Tuesday at the Holmes Center.

The Mountaineers (1-4, 0-1 SoCon) lost to the Catamounts (3-3, 1-0) for the first time in five years and just the third time in nearly a decade. WCU, which shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from beyond the arc in the first half, was able to build a double-digit lead (35-25) with 6:01 to go in the opening period.

Appalachian rallied to take a three-point lead (47-44), its largest of the game, when Maryah Sydnor made a layup with 16:39 to go in the game, but Western Carolina would reel off a 10-0 run to take a 54-47 lead and never surrendered its advantage en route to its third-straight win.

Despite the loss, several Mountaineers had standout performances, led by KeKe Cooper's 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, all career-highs. Sydnor poured in 20 points and ripped down 11 boards while Bria Huffman added eight points and three rebounds.

The Catamounts had four players score in double figures, led by Makensey Campbell, who scored 18 off the bench and finished 4-of-5 from long range. Rena Wakama and Lindsay Simpson each tallied 14 points while Justin Taylor scored 15 and added a team-best seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor while holding Western Carolina to 40.0 percent (24-of-60), but the Catamounts connected on 11-of-24 three-point attempts and 12-of-16 free throws.

Appalachian finished with a 38-33 edge in rebounds, dished out 16 assists and committed 18 turnovers while WCU finished with 17 assists and turned the ball over 16 times.

The Mountaineers return to action Dec. 4 when they travel to North Carolina A&T before heading to Missoula, Mont. for the Lady Griz Classic from Dec. 6-7.
