Bears Drop SAC Opener At Wingate PDF Print

The Wingate Women's Basketball Team (4-1, 2-1) downed Lenoir-Rhyne (4-2, 1-2), 61-51, Tuesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Cuddy Arena.
The Bulldogs' Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C.) was one of three players to score in double figures for Wingate, finishing with a team-high 14 points in the win.

L-R junior guard Jenni Gust (Colfax, Wis.) led all scorers with 17 points but the Bears shot just 27 percent (18-of-66) from the field in suffering their second straight loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 29-28 lead on a field goal by Gust with 18:08 remaining in the game but Wingate responded with the next six points and never trailed again.
Janitsha Williams added 13 points for the Bulldogs, who ended the contest with a 13-6 run over the final four minutes of regulation.

Junior guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) and freshman forward Morgan Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10 points each for the Bears, who also hit just one three-pointer in 12 attempts.

Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Brevard, N.C., to take on Brevard on Wednesday, December 4, beginning at 6:00 p.m., in a South Atlantic Conference game. Wingate hosts Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Wingate Downs Lenoir-Rhyne, 73-59, In Men's Basketball

The Wingate Men's Basketball Team (3-1, 3-0) remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference with a 73-59 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2, 2-1) Tuesday evening at Cuddy Arena.

The Bulldogs showed good offensive balance on the night with five players scoring in double figures and were led by Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) with 19 points.
L-R senior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) finished with a team-high 15 points while senior center Matt Kunz (Kernersville, N.C.) added 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Bulldogs held a 38-31 lead at halftime before extending their margin to 14 points on a pair of free throws by Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for a 53-39 advantage with 12:31 left. Turman finished with 11 points on the night.

Lenoir-Rhyne, however, tried to rally but couldn't get any closer than eight points the rest of the way. Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who shot 54 percent (23-of-43) for the game and never trailed in the entire contest.

McClure hit all three attempts from the charity stripe tonight to extend his consecutive free throws made streak to 37 but the Bears shot just 37 percent (11-of-30) in the second half in the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne faces Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference game next Wednesday in Brevard, N.C., beginning at 8:00 p.m. Wingate remains at home to take on Barton Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
