Appalachian State University football has secured a third home-and-home series versus an NCAA Division I FBS opponent with an agreement to play Akron in 2016 and ‘17, the schools announced on Monday.
Appalachian State will travel to Akron’s InfoCision Stadium on Sept. 24, 2016 with the Zips making a return trip to Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sept. 16, 2017.
“We’re pleased that Akron will serve as our third FBS home-and-home partner,” Appalachian State director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. “Akron plays in one of college football’s finest facilities and Coach Terry Bowden and his staff have the program on track to compete for Mid-American Conference championships in the near future. We think our fans will enjoy an early-season trip to Ohio — one of college football’s hotbeds — in 2016 and we are excited to host the Zips and their fans at The Rock in ‘17.”
The meetings are the first between Appalachian State and Akron, which first fielded a football team in 1891. UA has been a member of NCAA Division I since 1980, I-A/FBS since ‘87 and the Mid-American Conference since ‘92. Appalachian is 1-2 all-time versus current members of the MAC, with a 28-17 win over Massachusetts in the 2006 NCAA Division I Football national championship game and losses to Ball State in 1976 and 1977. However, the Mountaineers played an opponent from the league as recently as Aug. 31, 2002, when it lost to eventual MAC champion Marshall, 50-17.
Appalachian State, which begins play in the FBS Sun Belt Conference in 2014, also has future home-and-home series scheduled with Conference USA’s Southern Miss (2014-15) and Old Dominion (2015-16).
