Appalachian State University women’s soccer continues to be recognized for strong play this season. Junior forward Julia Holz (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and sophomore forward Samantha Childress

(Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) continue to rack up postseason accolades because of strong 2013 campaigns.

“It is truly an honor to have Sam and Julia recognized for the NCCSIA teams,” said head coach Sarah Strickland. “To be included among the finest in North Carolina is an amazing thing and we could not be prouder. They are both dynamic players, but above all else they are humble people with outstanding character.”

Holz was named to the 2013 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division all-state women’s soccer first team, while Childress was named to the NCCSIA second team.

Holz finished the season tied with Childress for the team lead in points with 20, which ties both for seventh all-time in program history. The Marietta, Ga. native scored seven goals and tallied six assists. Holz scored game-winning goals in a 2-1 victory over Southern Utah and a 5-0 win over Chattanooga. The junior now stands at 20 career goals which places her in a tie for fourth all-time in program history. Holz is also fourth all-time for assists in a season with six and 10th all-time with eight.

Childress blasted 10 goals in 2013 to lead the team and and puts her second all-time for goals in a season in program history and seventh all-time in career goals with 15. The Kernersville, N.C. native scored three game-winning goals this season against UNC Asheville in a 2-0 win, which saw Childress score both goals in the match. Childress also netted game-winners in a 3-1 victory at Georgia Southern and a 2-1 triumph in overtime at Davidson. The golden goal at Davidson marked the first time in program history that App State won on the road against the Wildcats and the goals scored were the first against the SoCon foe since 2007.
