Appalachian State University running back Marcus Cox (Dacula, Ga./Dacula) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for a SoCon-record sixth time this season on Monday.

Cox’s sixth SoCon Freshman-of-the-Week award in 10 starts this season breaks the previous conference record of five that was previously shared by Western Carolina wide receiver Lamont Seward (2000) and Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards (2006).

Cox’s latest honor came on the strength of a record-breaking performance in Appalachian’s 48-27 romp over longtime rival Western Carolina on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Cox set Appalachian State single-game freshman records with 215 rushing yards and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) in the rout. The 215 rushing yards are the most by any NCAA Division I freshman this season (FCS or FBS) while the four touchdowns are tied for the most by a Division I frosh in 2013.

During the outstanding performance in the season finale, Cox also became Appalachian State’s all-time freshman leader in rushing yards (1,250) and total touchdowns (21) while tying the school’s freshman record for rushing touchdowns (15). He also extended his school record for total yards from scrimmage (1,809) by a freshman.

Cox is a leading candidate for the SoCon Freshman of the Year award, which will be announced Tuesday, and the Jerry Rice Award, which honors the nation’s top NCAA Division I FCS freshman and will be presented on Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.
