Bentley Adds Five for 2014-15 Season PDF Print

Appalachian State University wrestling head coach JohnMark Bentley announced the signings of five student-athletes who signed National Letters of intent for the 2014-15 season.




The Mountaineers will welcome student-athletes Jacob Grigg, David Peters-Logue, Michael Longo, Payton Shuford and Colton Jackson as early signees for next seasons squad.


“I am extremely excited about the addition of these five early signees to our program,” said coach Bentley. “All five have add a lot of success on the national level while at the high school level, and I believe they will add a lot to the future success of App State wrestling.”


Jacob Grigg – Gastonia, N.C. – East Gaston High School – proj. 125/133

Grigg was a state champion in 2012-13 and placed at Virginia Beach for junior nationals when he took eighth place. Grigg lost a tough first round match and was able to come back and win seven straight matches to place.


Colton Jackson – Lady Lake, Fla. – The Villages High School – proj. 165/174

Jackson was a 2012 stat placer at 152 pounds when he finished fifth and then in 2013 was a state champion at 160 pounds. From 2012 to 2013 Jackson was named outstanding wrestler six times. Jackson holds a record of 129-27 from 2010-13, which includes 77 pins.


At the 2011 NHSCA nationals, Jackson placed fifth at 143 pounds. Jackson was a 2012 Brute Adidas national champion at 155 pounds. For 2011-12, Jackson placed fourth at the NHSCA national duals.


Michael Longo – Corona, Calif. – Santiago High School – proj. 141/149

Longo finished in 6th place as a junior at state, while also qualifying for state his freshman and sophomore years. Longo was a National Cadet Runner-Up at Fargo and has been a two-time Fargo All-American. Longo also placed fourth at the 2013 Super 32.


David Peters-Logue – Hillsborough, N.C. – Orange High School – proj. 174/184

Peters-Logue has been an all-conference wrestler as a sophomore and a junior while finishing 5th in state his sophomore year and 2nd in state his junior year. Peters-Logue’s team has finished as undefeated state champions the past two seasons. He has earned the coaches award as a junior and currently holds a career record of 95 wins and 15 losses through his junior year.


Payton Shuford – Statesville, N.C. – West Iredell High School – proj. 133/141

Shuford was an undefeated conference champion his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. He was a North Piedmont Conference wrestler of the year during his junior year. As a freshman, Shuford was a regional runner-up and a regional champion and state runner-up during his sophomore campaign. Shuford was a regional champ and state champion during this junior season and has compiled a 113-6 record through his junior year.


The Statesville, N.C. native has been a NHSCA All-American, Disney Duals All-American and a Journeyman Classic runner-up in 2013. While wrestling for Iredell Rattlers Wrestling Club, Shuford has been a NC USA and AAU state champion, USA Nationals champion and was ranked No. 1 for USA wrestling future Olympians in eighth grade.


The 2013 Mountaineers return to action on Sunday when they compete in their 13th straight Keystone Classic. The tournament will be held at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa.
