Appalachian State University running back Marcus Cox (Dacula, Ga./Dacula) has been named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for a SoCon and Appalachian State record-tying fifth time, the
league office announced on Monday. The true freshman’s latest award comes on the heels of rushing for 119 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s 33-21 win over No. 24 Wofford.
Since the SoCon began naming a Freshman of the Week in 1988, Cox is the first running back and only the third player overall to receive the honor five times. Western Carolina wide receiver Lamont Seward (2000) and Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards (2006) are the only other five-time winners of the award.
Eighty-seven of Cox’s 119 yards and all three touchdowns came in the second half on Saturday, which helped Appalachian erase a 14-10 halftime deficit and earn its first win over Wofford in three seasons. The 100-yard rushing effort was his fourth in the last five games and fifth in nine career starts while his three touchdown runs (from one, three and two yards out) matched a career high originally set on Nov. 2 versus Chattanooga.
The 119 yards also pushed Cox’s season rushing total to 1,035 yards, making him the SoCon’s first 1,000-yard rusher this season and only the third freshman in Appalachian State history to top the 1,000-yard rushing plateau, joining Edwards (1,153 yards in ‘06) and Chip Hooks (1,062 yards in 1991).
Cox and the Mountaineers close out the season on Saturday when they host longtime rival Western Carolina at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff for the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug and the final SoCon game in Appalachian State history is set for 3:30 p.m.
