Bears' Late Rally Upends Huskies PDF Print

Bunker Hill High rallied from 11 points down in the first half on Friday night to nip host Ashe County 20-17 in the opening round of the Class 2AA state playoffs. It's

the Bears’ first postseason road win since 1987. The Huskies haven't won a state playoff game since 2007, their only win in post-season play.

The 13th-seeded Bears (8-4) advance to face fifth-seeded Hunter Huss (5-7) in Gastonia next Friday night in the second round.

Ashe County, which shared the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference  championship with Starmount and North Wilkes, took advantage of three Bunker Hill turnovers in the first half to take a commanding a 17-6 halftime lead. Johnathon Cox paced the Huskies (7-5) by scoring twice. His 23-yard run in the first quarter gave Ashe County a 7-0 lead, and his seven-yard run in the second quarter gave the Huskies a 14-6 lead.

The Huskie gambled and recovered an on-side kick that led to Kendal Richardson’s 37-yard field goal with one second left in the first half for its 11-point halftime lead.

The Bears, who turned the ball over early in the third quarter, finally got on track with a five-yard TD run by Colton Chapman to trim the lead to 17-12. In the fourth quarter, the Bears faced a fourth-and-four at the Huskies’ 47. Bunker Hill lined up to go for it but Chapman instead pooch punted and it was down at the Ashe County one.

The Bears’ defense forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with good field position after the punt. Behind the running of Chapman, Jordan Eckard and Cooper Wray, the Bears punched it in on Chapman's three-yard TD run with 1:28 left to play. Chapman’s two-point conversion run gave the Bears a 20-17 lead.

A Justin Bowman interception allowed the Bears to  run out the clock. The Huskies registered their first winning season since 2008.

JACKSON LEADS AVERY BY BESSEMER CITY

The Avery Vikings (5-7) marched their way into a second-round state playoff game by knocking off Bessemer City 36-21 in their post-season opener at MacDonald Stadium in Newland, N.C.

Quarterback Tre Jackson led the way. He ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns; he threw for 48 yards and a pair of scores. He also kicked a 22-yard field goall. The win moves Avery into a second-round Class 1AA state playoff game at Swain County next Friday night. Swain County, the No.1 seed on Class 1AA, blasted East Wilkes 56-31 Friday night.

Running back Austin Phillips paced Avery's running game with 110 yards on 19 carries and a TD. Trailing 14-7 with 7:32 left in the first half, the Vikings scored 17 unanswered points to take a 23-14 lead.

Bessemer City (6-6) got within two at 23-21 on Kadrian Pitts' 46-yard scoring burst, but Jackson settled the issue as he scored on a 44-yard run before he hooked up with Heath Austin on a 23-yard scoring pass with 1:37 left to play.

The Vikings had 299 yards offensively, including 268 on the ground. Bessemer City finished with 328 yards, including 299 on the ground. But the Yellow Jackets, from the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference, turned it over three times.

Josh Davis paced the Yellow Jackets running game with 96 yards on seven carries; Jha'Qui Adams had 70 yards on eight carries with a TD.
