The Appalachian State University wrestling team began its tri-dual on Friday with Grand Canyon and finished later with CSU Bakersfield.

The Mountaineers (2-2) started off with the Antelopes of Grand Canyon. At 125 pounds, nationally ranked Dominic Parisi lost to AJ Salazar by pinfall. Vito Pasone was defeated by Lino Estrada at 133 pounds by a tight 7-6 decision. Estrada was a Division II national qualifier a year ago.

Nationally ranked Dylan Cottrell got the Mountaineers on the board with a 4-3 decision over DII All-American Mike Hamel at 149 pounds, which included two escapes and a takedown. At 157 pounds, Nick Hall fell to Bryant Wood by a close decision of 7-6. Zack Strickland added to the App State score with a 5-2 decision over Juan Carlos Maynes at 165 pounds with two takedowns and an escape. Colin Hedash brought the Mountaineers to within six at 15-9 with a 5-2 decision over Martin Fabbian at 174 pounds, which included a takedown, escape and 2:38 of riding time.

Austin Gaun of Grand Canyon defeated Alex Kruklinski at 184 pounds by a major decision of 13-3 to stretch the Antelope lead to 19-9. Paul Weiss was defeated by a decision of 4-2 at 197 pounds by Marcus Haughian. At 285 pounds, Denzel Dejournette recouped some points for the Apps with a 2-0 decision over his opponent, Peter Anguiano. Dejournette earned a point for riding time with 1:56.

Unfortunately it wasn't enough for the Mountaineers as they would drop their first dual match of the season, falling to the Antelopes of Grand Canyon, 22-12.

In the second match of the evening, Parisi got off to a fast start for the Mountaineers at 125 pounds pinning Sergio Mendez of CSU Bakersfield in 1:58. Ian Nickell would defeat Pasone at 133 pounds by a major decision 16-7. Smith lost by a close decision of 9-6 at 141 pounds to Timmy Box, a second place finisher at the Pac-12 Championships at 141.

Cottrell put the Apps back in the lead with a pin on Dalton Kelly in 1:28 for a 12-7 Mountaineer advantage and his second win of the day. Kelly finished fifth at 149 pounds at the Pac-12 Championships last year. At 157 pounds, the Runners' Spencer Hill would win by decision over Hall, 8-4. David Meza, another fifth place finisher at the Pac-12 Championships at 157 pounds, defeated Strickland at 165 pounds by decision, 6-4.

At 174 pounds, Hedash fell to the Pac-12 Champion at 174 and number eight ranked Bryce Hammond by a major decision 11-1. Nick Vetell's first match garners a good result at 184 pounds. Vetell defeated Sean Pollock by decision 9-6 to draw the Mountaineers closer trailing the Runners just 17-15. Weiss fell to Ruben Franklin at 197 pounds by a 12-2 major decision. In what was the final match of the evening, Dejournette defeated Sam Cervantes by decision 5-2 for his second win of the day. The Apps would drop a tough dual match to the Runners, 21-18.
