Two Mountaineers Named First Team All SoCon PDF Print

Appalachian State University men’s soccer placed four players on the Southern Conference’s all-conference team, as voted on by SoCon coaches and announced by the conference office on

Tuesday.

Junior Stanley Broaden (Wilmington, N.C./Eugene Ashley) led the Mountaineers in points this season with 14. Broaden scored five goals, including a game-winning goal at ETSU. Broden scored two goals in the game and the game-winner came in the second overtime with 33 seconds left to lift the Mountaineers to victory. Broaden also tallied four assists on the season.

Senior Harrison Delbridge (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Broughton), a preseason first-team pick, joins Broaden on the all-conference first team. Delbridge was crucial to the Mountaineers success on defense this season and added offensive value by scoring three goals and taking 25 shots from the backline. Delbridge scored the game-winning goal over Wofford, the only conference loss for the eventual SoCon regular season champions, on a free kick blast from just outside the top of the 18.

Freshmen Stephen Chapman (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) and Donovan Japp (Oakridge, N.C./Northwest Guilford) earned all-freshman team honors for the Mountaineers. Both Chapman and Japp finished with nine points, including four goals and an assist each. Chapman tallied a game-winning goal in a 5-0 rout of UNC Asheville earlier in the season. Japp’s lone assist set up the game-winner against Longwood when Tommy Labriola scored to go up 2-1.

The Mountaineers posted a 4-7-7 record, which sets a new school record for ties in a season. The previous record was six draws in 1983. App State came extremely close to a semifinal bid at Elon with a lead late in the second half, but fell in penalty kicks in heartbreaking fashion for the second year in a row.
