Lenoir-Rhyne's Jazmine Charles has been named the first South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player Of The Week for the 2013-14 season, league officials announced today.
Charles, a junior guard from Lexington, N.C., averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 11-of-12 (92 percent) from the free throw line in leading L-R to victories over Barton (87-68) and Lees-McRae (75-63) last Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Charles opened the season with 13 points and five rebounds while connecting on a pair of three-pointers in the win over the Bulldogs.
In the victory over Bobcats on Sunday, Charles finished with a double-double - a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds - and hit all 10 free throw attempts.
Charles earned First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2012-13 after leading the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and three-pointers made (44) as the Bears finished 19-10 on the year and received a berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
Lenoir-Rhyne (2-0) remains on the road Wednesday when it travels to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey (1-1) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
L-R's first home game of the 2013-14 season takes place on Wednesday, November 20, against Queens in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium starting at 6:00 p.m.
