Gust Scores 23, L-R Women Win

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (1-0) opened the 2013-14 season with an 86-67 victory over Barton (0-1) Saturday evening at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge at the Holt Fieldhouse.

 

 

L-R junior guard Jenni Gust (Colfax, Wis.) led all scorers with 23 points and was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bears in the win.

 

Freshman forward Morgan Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) came off the bench to register 15 points as the Bears raced to a 50-35 halftime advantage en route to the win.

 

Barton was led by Brianna Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Nyeshea Willie (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 16 points in the losing effort.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.), last year's leading scorer and a first-team all-league pick, also added 13 points off the bench as the Bears kept their lead above double digits throughout the second half.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne also connected on 31-of-40 free throw attempts in the game and used a 16-3 run late in the first half to take control of the contest.

 

On the second day of the challenge on Sunday afternoon, Lenoir-Rhyne faces Lees-McRae at 1:00 p.m., while Barton plays the host school, Carson-Newman, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

 

 

Bears Prevails Over Pfeiffer In Season Opener

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (1-0) got its 2013-14 campaign off to a strong start with an 85-59 victory over Pfeiffer (0-1) Saturday evening at the Salisbury Roundball Classic at Goodman Gymnasium.

 

L-R senior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.), an all-league preseason honoree, led the way with a game-high 22 points in the win.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne senior center Matt Kunz (Kernersville, N.C.) and senior forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) added 10 points each as the Bears broke open a close contest by outscoring the Falcons by a 48-25 count in the second half.

 

Pfeiffer was led by Mike Smith (Lexington, Ky.), who finished with a team-high 16 points but the Falcons turned the ball over 24 times in the setback.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 37-34 advantage at the intermission but broke the game open in the second half and led by as many as 28 points on a lay-up by McClure late in the contest.

 

L-R also connected on 10 three-pointers on the night and shot 55 percent (16-of-29) after halftime in the victory.

 

On the final day of the classic on Sunday, Lenoir-Rhyne takes on Lees-McRae at 4:00 p.m., while Pfeiffer faces Catawba in the first game beginning at 2:00 p.m.

 

 

L-R Cross Country Ends Season At Southeast Regionals

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams concluded the 2013 season at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship Saturday morning at McAlpine Creek Park.

 

In the men's competition, the L-R finished 10th out of 28 schools while Mount Olive took home the regional title.

 

Joining Mount Olive in advancing to the national championship meet were King and GRU Augusta, who finished second and third, respectively.

 

L-R was led by freshman Zach Millsaps (Statesville, N.C.), who finished the 10K course with a time of 33:16 for 38th place overall. Mount Olive's Dylan Lafond won the meet with a 30:51.

 

On the women's side, Wingate finished first overall while Lenoir-Rhyne placed 28th out of 31 schools. Wingate will be joined by Flagler (second) and Columbus State (third) at the national finals.

 

Senior Laura Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) was the Bears' top runner in the 6K, finishing 64th overall with a 24:27. King's Hannah Witt was the top female runner after timing a 21:46.

 

The 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships will take place on Saturday, November 23, at the Plants Ferry Athletic Complex in Spokane, Wash.
