ASU Wrestling Closes Preseason with Black & Gold Meet PDF Print

Appalachian State wrestling wrapped up its preseason on Monday evening at Varsity Gym with the Black team defeating the Gold team, 27-12.

The dual-meet was the final intrasquad to see who would make the starting lineup for the start of the 2013-14 season, which is vastly approaching.

The Black team, coached by Daren Burns, took an early advantage in the meet and never looked back, defeating the Gold team coached by Matt Fisk.

“The thing I liked the most was that I saw a lot of offense and a lot of risk taking,” said head coach JohnMark Bentley. “These guys wrestle each other every day in practice and so sometimes in these intrasquad matches there’s not too much offense and they are more conservative. We have to work on some fundamentals on bottom position. On top we didn’t take advantage of some situations where we could have gotten riding time or a chance to turn somebody.”

Appalachian begins its season on Sunday with a very young squad when it hosts Anderson University at 2 p.m. and Cumberland College at 4 p.m. The Mountaineers will travel the following week for a trip to California from Nov. 15-17.

Overall, coach Bentley likes what he has seen from his young squad in preseason preparation of the regular season.

“We have a lot of talent and guys that are working hard. I’m excited for this year. We have so many freshman. We could potentially start nine freshman or sophomores and one upper classman. It’s exciting for the future of our program.”
