Lenoir-Rhyne's Jimmy Long and Zach Neumann have been named the South Atlantic Conference Football Defensive and Special Teams Players Of The Week, respectively.

Long, a senior defensive lineman from Gainesville, Va., finished with nine tackles, two quarterback sacks and a forced fumble in L-R's 37-3 win over 16th-ranked Carson-Newman last Saturday in a league game at home.

L-R's first touchdown of the game, which proved to be the game-winner, was set up by a Long sack and forced fumble early in the second quarter.

Long helped lead a Lenoir-Rhyne defense which held Carson-Newman to just 155 yards of total offense including 90 on the ground.

The Eagles, which came into the contest ranked second in the nation in rushing (376.1 ypg) while averaging over 500 yards of offense and 40 points a game, were held to their lowest rushing total under the tenure of 34-year Head Coach Ken Sparks.

Currently, Long ranks fifth on the team in tackles with 49 to go along with 6.5 quarterback sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Neumann, a senior placekicker from Mechanicsville, Md., hit all three field goal attempts from over 40 yards in the second half including a career-long 47-yarder in the fourth quarter in the victory over the Eagles. Neumann also hit on all four point-after-attempts against Carson-Newman to finish with 13 points on the day.

Neumann, an all-conference and all-region selection last season, is 10-of-12 on field goal attempts and 32-of-34 on extra points this year. Neumann set the school record for points by a placekicker in a single season with 83 in 2012 is second on the team in scoring this year with 62 points.

Newberry's Corey Washington was named the South Atlantic Conference Football Offensive Player Of The Week today as well.

Lenoir-Rhyne (8-1) has won eight straight games and is off to its best start since ending the 1967 season with a record of 8-1. L-R hosts Alderson Broaddus (4-4), a first-year program, in a non-conference game this Saturday beginning at Noon as part of Senior Day. The Bears have also clinched at least a share of its third consecutive league title.
