Appalachian State University women’s soccer fell to Western Carolina on Wednesday evening 1-0. The Mountaineers (8-5-5, 4-2-4) entered the game guaranteed a spot in the Southern Conference

tournament with the only question being whether or not they would host a first round game. With the loss and many dominoes falling, App State will travel to Samford as the fifth seed in the tournament.

The Catamounts (10-8-1, 4-6-0) scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute to break a scoreless tie with just eight minutes to play. Kelly Pannell sent a pass to Sara Robinson at the top of the box who then had an open opportunity to score and took advantage.

Highlighting the night for the Mountaineers was sophomore goalkeeper Megan Roberson (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth). A strong night in net for Roberson resulted in eight huge saves for the Apps to keep them in the game until the clock read zeroes.

Western Carolina led in shots 13 to eight and corner kicks eight to five. The Mountaineers were credited with a team save when in a 1-0 game Nicole Steyl (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) headed a ball away on the goal line to keep the game in striking distance.

App State will now travel to Birmingham, Alabama to play the Samford Bulldogs with kick off set for 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Women's Soccer Tournament Field Set

Regular-season champion Furman has claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.

The event begins Sunday with the top four seeds hosting first-round matches. The semifinals and championship will be played at Wofford’s Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C., on Nov. 8 and 10, respectively.

The Paladins finished the regular season with an 8-1-1 SoCon mark, locking up their first regular-season title since 2003 on Sunday. Furman will host No. 8 seed Western Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Catamounts (4-6-0 SoCon) downed Appalachian State 1-0 Wednesday to secure their spot in the tournament field.

Elon played to a 2-2 draw with UNCG on Wednesday to lock up the No. 2 seed. The Phoenix finished 5-1-4 in league play and will host Davidson, which beat Georgia Southern 2-0 Wednesday to clinch a spot in the tournament and the No. 7 seed at 4-5-1 in SoCon action. Elon and Davidson will square off at 2 p.m. Sunday.

No. 3 seed UNCG finished 5-2-3 in the SoCon and will host sixth-seeded Wofford on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Terriers, who fell 2-0 to Furman on Wednesday and finished the league slate at 4-2-4, will be making their first appearance in the tournament since 2010.

Samford, which vaulted from sixth in the standings to fourth on the final day of the regular season, finishing at 5-3-2, will host No. 5 seed Appalachian State at 4 p.m. Central on Sunday. The Mountaineers finished in a tie with Wofford at 4-2-4 but held the tiebreaker over the Terriers by virtue of their draw with Furman earlier in the season.

The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
