The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (12-3-1, 8-1-1) clinched at least a share of its fourth consecutive South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 2-0 win over Brevard (3-12-1, 0-9-1) Wednesday on the road.
L-R, ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, received goals from sophomore midfielders Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) and Emmi Dunn (Reading, Pa.) in the win. Alequine scored from about 30 yards out to open the scoring in the 38th minute of action. The goal was Alequine's team-leading ninth of the season.
Dunn gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage at the 69:11 mark of the second half after heading in a corner kick from sophomore defender Brianna Belsky (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), who was credited with the assist.
Junior goalkeeper Genny Little (Fredericksburg, Va.) earned the win and improved to 11-1 on the year after playing the first half for the Bears, who held a 25-2 advantage in shots taken in the victory.
L-R freshman goalkeeper Andrea Leano (San Diego, Calif.) held Brevard scoreless in the second half while Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va.) suffered the loss despite making seven saves on the day for the Tornados.
The Bears are also ranked first for the second week in a row in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Poll. The top six schools in the region earn a berth to the national tournament.
Lenoir-Rhyne closes out the regular season against Queens in a league match Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., beginning at 2:00 p.m. Brevard plays Coker on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., in Hartsville, S.C.
