The Cleveland Browns signed former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Armanti Edwards. Edwards is a former third-round draft pick from Appalachian State who has five receptions for 121 yards and a seven-yard punt return average and a 19.7 kickoff return average. Edwards was the star quarterback for Appalachian State from 2006-2009 where he won two FCS championships. Edwards was 42-7 as a starting quarterback at ASU. He is also the only player to win Walter Payton Award  twice. That award goes to the best offensive player in the nation in the Football Championship Series. Edwards captured that award in 2008 and 2009.

Edwards returned punts for the Panthers and he might get a shot to do that with the Browns after Travis Benjamin sustained a season-ending knee injury on Sunday while returning a punt in the third quarter.

The Panthers release Edwards on October 8.  Edwards played in four games for the Panthers this season with no catches this season. Head coach Ron Rivera called Edwards the training camp MVP at Wofford College. Edwards

Edwards was slowed by a hamstring injury during the preseason, and that injury also cost him the No.3 wideout spot on the team. Ted Ginn Jr., who secured that spot, thanks to Edwards being hurt, also became Carolina's return specialist on special teams.

Edwards joins a Cleveland team that has had its share of problems this season, especially at quarterback. The Browns (3-5), who have lost three in a row, are mired in third place in the AFC North Division. They play the Baltimore Ravens at home on Sunday.
