Woods Ties For 6th, Knights Win Title Again PDF Print

Emilia Migliaccio of Raleigh Athens Drive maintained the lead on Tuesday she had built after the opening day and held on to win the individual title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.

Migliaccio and Megan Cullip of Charlotte Ardrey Kell were tied for the lead after Monday’s opening round with 73s.  Migliaccio had a four-over 76 in the final round for a 149 total, two shots ahead of Meghan Symons of Green Hope and Moon Cheong of Ardrey Kell.

Cullip had an 84 in the final round to fall out of contention. There were 10 golfers within five shots of the lead entering the final 18 holes.

Savanna Wood of Watauga Highw fired a three-over par 75 on the final round and  finished in a sixth-place tie with Victoria Allred of Pfafftown-Reagan. She jumped six spots in the standings. Wood, who had an 80 in the opening round, finished with a two-day total of 155, leaving her seven shots off the lead.

Defending team champion Ardrey Kell made it two in a row and three titles in the last four years, taking the crown with a score of 477, 12 shots ahead of Green Hope after holding a 10-stroke advantage after Monday’s rounds.  Southern Pines Pinecrest was third at 494 and Holly Springs placed fourth at 509. Alexander Central finished in fifth place at 511.

In Class 3A at Foxfire Village, Ledford won the championship with a 498, besting the field by 29 shots. Siranon Shoomer of Lee County won the individual title with a two-day total of 149. She had a two-over par 73 on the final round. First-round leader Ashley Sloup of South Brunswick had a 75 on the final round and finished in second place with a two-day total of 150, one shot back.

Bree Keller of Hickory finished in a four-way for 21st place with an 85 on the final round and two-day total of 174.

In Class 1A/2A at Southern Pines, Salisbury won the state title with a 474, besting the field by the whopping margin of 57 shots. Avery finished in eighth place with a 585, a 301 on the final round.

Annika Winebarger of Elkin won the individual title with a 151 two-day total. Winebarger had a 77 on the final round. Isabell Rusher, who was the first-round leader, had a 79 on the final day of competition and finished in a two-way tie for second place with Mary Francis Hall of Elkin.

Both players finished with a 154, three shots off the lead. Paige Church of Avery finished 12th with a 168. She had a 82 on the final round; Sarah Hardin of Ashe County finished in 40th place with a 200. She had a 94 on the final round. Devyn Plyler of the Vikings finished in 43rd place with a 201 (a 105 on the final round), Bridgett Smith of Avery was 60th with a 216; Olivia Barr of Ashe County finished in a tie for 65th place with a 223./

The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals, and a total of nine teams and 78 golfers competed in the event, the 11th year that the sport has been classified. It is the third year that three separate championships have been held and the 33rd year for state championship competition in the sport.
