PINEHURST – Nine golfers are within five shots of the lead in the individual standings after Monday's opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.
Megan Cullip of Charlotte Ardrey Kell amd Emilia Migliaccio of Raleigh Athens Drive had the low rounds of the day with one-over par 73 to top the leader board. They are two shots ahead of Moon Cheong of Ardrey Kell.
A trio of Wake County golfers had five-over scores of 77 to tie for fourth, including Green Hope’s Meghan Symonds, Kendra Dalton of Wake Forest Heritage and Savannah Gowarty of Raleigh Sanderson. Savanna Wood of the Pioneers is seven shots off the lead.
The Watauga High senior fired an eight-over par 80 in the opening round and finds herself in 12th place. Wood, a four-time state qualifier, finished fourth as a sophomore and finished 12th last year. She has made a verbal commitment to attend Appalachian State University to play golf next season.
Par is set at 72 and the layout is 5,735 yards. Defending champion Ardrey Kell leads the team standings with a 235, 10 shots ahead of second-place Cary Green Hope. Wake Forest has a 252 while Holly Springs and Southern Pines Pinecrest are just behind at 253.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 10 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 11th year that the sport has been classified. It is the second time that three separate championships have been held and the 33rd year for state championship competition in the sport. The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at nine o’clock on Tuesday morning.
In Class 3A, Bree Keller of Hickory is tied for 25th after the opening round at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Foxfire Village, N.C. Keller fired a an 18-over par 89. Ashley Sloup of South Brunswick is the first round leader with a four-over par 75. Leford is the team leader after the opening round with a score of 250. Northern Guilford is six shots back in second place with a 256; West Henderson is in third with a 259.
In the Class 1A/2A state tournament at Southern Pines, Avery is in eighth place after the opening round with a team score of 284. Salisbury owns the first-round lead with a 233. Newport Croatan and Elkin are tied for second with a 267.
Individually, Annika Winebarger of Elkin is the first-round leader with a three-over par 74. Isabella Rusher of Salisbury one shot back with a four-over 75. Paige Chruch of Avery is in a three-way tie for 13th with a 15-over par 86; Devyn Plyler is tied for 26th with a 96; Brigett Smith of the Vikings is in a three-way tie for 48th with a 102; Sarah Hardin of Ashe County is in a three-way tie for 56th with a 106; Olivia Barr of the Huskies is tied for 59th with a 107.
