Quarterback Titus Smith hooked up with Khris Gardin on an 80-yard touchdown pass with less than four minutes to play as Freedom defeated Hibriten 42-35 in Morganton, N.C., Friday night.

The win moves FHS (8-1 overall; 5-0 in the NW3A/4A Conference) into sole possession of first place. Gardin, who suffered a sprained ankle on the game’s opening kickoff, caught three for a game-high 131 yards in the second half.

The Panthers (8-1, 4-1), who suffered their first loss of the year, fall into second place, one game ahead of Watauga, Patton, and Hickory with two weeks left on the regular-season schedule.
