A great season came to an end for Meghan Smith and Kelsi Kanoy of the Watauga High girl's tennis team on Friday afternoon. Smith and Kanoy, who turned some heads by finishing fourth at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Western Regional
last weekend at Cornelius-Hough, followed that up by picking up a victory in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 4A doubles championships on Friday in Raleigh, N.C.
Smith and Kanoy defeated Anna Porcelli and Suzie Schoolfield of Wilmington-Laney, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in their first-round match at the Millbrook Exchange Park. But Smith and Kanoy were halted in the second round by Lauren McCorquodale and Savannah Taranta of Raleigh-Millbrook, 1-6, 3-6.
"I am very proud of (Smith and Kanoy) accomplishments," said WHS coach Beth Watts. "To reach the final eight against a competitive field like this was a great accomplishment for our girls."
This is WHS' deepest advancement at the state tennis meet since Anna Lee Evans won the girl's Class 4A state singles championship in 2005.
