The Pfeiffer University women's volleyball team tallied 36 kills and rallied from an early deficit in the third
set en route to a sweep of visiting Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday evening.
Pfeiffer (7-15, 4-7 CC) won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-15, and 25-20, attacking at a .221 clip while limiting Lees-McRae (2-21, 0-10 CC) to 15 kills on the night. Each team posted six blocks in the contest.
Haylee Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with six kills and four blocks (three solo, one assist), as Avalon Liscio (Naples, Fla.) added five smashes. Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) chipped in 14 assists, while Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) posted a match-high two aces.
Brianna Jones led the way for Pfeiffer with a match-high 10 kills, attacking at a .316 clip, as Kelly Lancellot and Shelby Younger added eight and seven smashes, respectively. Haley Denny posted a contest-best 11 digs while Emily Wall and Lauren Carman tallied 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
Pfeiffer got off to a strong start in the first set, opening an early 11-4 lead before the Bobcats cut the margin to 11-7 following a solo stuff by Leonard. The Falcons countered with an 11-6 run, stretching the advantage to 22-10 on a block by Lancellot and Allison Rosas. Lees-McRae would battle back with an 8-4 spurt, fighting off a pair of set points, including an emphatic block by Leonard, before Pfeiffer claimed the frame on a Bobcat miscue.
Lees-McRae continued to battle in the second, cutting the advantage to 9-6 following a Leonard kill before Pfeiffer responded, pushing the margin to 16-6 on an ace by Denny. After the Falcons stretched the lead to 20-8, Lees-McRae answered with four straight points, trimming the gap to 20-12 with a block from Liscio and Angela Morse (Clinton Township, Mich.). Pfeiffer would counter with five of the next eight points, capping the set on a Lancellot kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bobcats rallied from an early deficit in the third, claiming a 10-9 advantage following a Curry ace. Pfeiffer would answer with an 11-7 run, taking a 20-17 lead on an ace by Wall. The Falcons held on from there, closing out the set and the match on a service by Kelsey Blauser.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday when the Bobcats travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on Mount Olive College in league play at 7 p.m.
