The Watauga High boy's soccer team saw its hopes for a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championship
dashed on Monday night in Newton, N.C.
Zach Durham scored the only goal as Fred T. Foard defeated WHS, 1-0. And with the win, the Tigers, thanks to Hickory beating Hickory Monday night, propelled Foard into first place in the NW3A/4A Conference standings with just one game left on the schedule. Monday's win also avenged a 1-0 double-overtime loss at Jack Groce Stadium in Boone on September 25.
The loss leaves WHS (15-4-1 overall; 8-4-1 NW3A/4A) in third place, two games off the lead. The Pioneers haven't won a conference championship since 2007. And WHS is reeling at the moment. The Pioneers have lost three of their last four games, and they've only scored twice in those three setbacks. The Pioneers, despite the loss, are still the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the NW3A/4A.
Fred T. Foard, which is currently the No.1 seed among the Class 3A schools in the league, will close out the regular season on Wednesday at Hibriten. The Pioneers return home to play Freedom Wednesday night; it will also be Senior Night.
The WHS junior varsity team and Foard played to a 2-2 tie.
