he Watauga High volleyball team defeated Mooresville (4-17), the No.3 seed from the Northern Piedmont 3A/4A Conference, in a three-game sweep Saturday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Pioneers (15-8), the No.1 seed from the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, defeated the Blue Devils, 25-12, 25-17, 25-17 in the opening-round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A state playoffs. The win moves WHS into a second-round game Tuesday night against Asheville-Roberson (the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference) in Asheville.
The Rams (16-6), who defeated Charlotte-Olympic 3-0 on Saturday, have a better winning percentage. The Rams have won 73% of their games; WHS has won 65% of its matches.
Rebecca Hayes led the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. She finished with a team-high 16 kills and three blocks. Sarah Petersen had ten kills and Sydney Farthing had 18 digs and two aces. Sarah Combs and Savannah Rusher had 15 assists apiece; Kiersten McClannon had 11 digs and two aces.
