Chalk Up Another One For WHS PDF Print

The Watauga High cross country teams chalked up their fifth consecutive Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championship on Thursday afternoon at Freedom High School in Morganton, N.C.

 

 

The WHS boys defending their title by placing seven runners among the top 20 finishers. Junior Michael Holland paced the Pioneers by finishing third in 17:09.92. Matthew Osborne of the Pioneers finished fifth in 17:24.22, and Jacob Soule was seventh in 17:39.05.

 

Dylan Matthewson of South Caldwell won the individual championship as he crossed the finish line in the blistering time of 16:26.74. Broderick Bauguess of Fred T. Foard finished a strong second in 16:44.23. The Pioneers won the team championship with 41 points; Foard finished second with 48 points. South Caldwell finished a distant third with 94 points.

 

The WHS girls won the championship with 41 points. Kathleen Mansure led the way by finishing second in 20:27.08. She finished just two seconds behind Ella Juerges of Hickory, who won the individual title in 20:25.40. Lily Weeks of the Pioneers finished seventh in 21:16.27; senior Celia Jackson of the Pioneers finished eighth in 21:35.20.

 

Hickory finished second in the team standings with 48 points; Fred T. Foard finished third with 58 points. WHS travels to McAlpine Park in Charlotte for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Western Regional next Saturday, October 26. Providence High will host the event.

 

The boy's race begins at 10:30 a.m., the girl's race begins at 11:30 a.m. The state finals will be held at Beeson Park in Kernersville, N.C., on Saturday, November 2. The Class 4A boy's race begins at 3 p.m.; the girl's title race starts at 4 p.m.
