WHS Volleyball Nails Down Top Seed PDF Print

It's been a frustrating season for the Watauga High volleyball team to say the least. But the Pioneers (14-8 overall; 8-6 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) salvaged a little satisfaction Monday night as they

knocked off South Caldwell 3-0 at Lentz-Eggers Gym on Senior Night.



The win gave WHS a winning record in league play, and it also gave the Pioneers the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the NW3A/4A Conference. The state playoffs pairings will be announced on Thursday; the state playoffs begin on Saturday.


WHS is scheduled to play the No.3 seed from the Northern Piedmont 3A/4A Conference at home. The winner of that match will play either the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference, or the No.4 seed from the South Mecklenburg 8 Conference next Tuesday.


The Pioneers defeated South Caldwell, 25-9, 25-11, 25-9, Monday night. Rebecca Hayes led the way with 12 kills and three blocks; Meredith Farthing had nine kills and ten digs; Sierra Hill had eight kills; Sarah Combs had 17 assists and three aces; Whitney Dunnigan had 15 assists and three aces; Kiersten McClannon had four aces and six digs.


WHS won the junior varsity match, 2-0 (25-6, 25-21). Reina Marze led the way with 19 assists; Tayler McCune had five kills and four digs; Olivia Williamson had five kills; Callie Idol had five aces.
