Appalachian State University women’s soccer dropped its first game in Southern Conference play to the Samford Bulldogs by a score of 2-1.

The Mountaineers (6-5-2, 3-1-2) found themselves in an early hole 1-0 in the 10th minute of the game. The Bulldogs’ (10-3-1, 4-1-1) Amanda Abbott received a pass up the far sideline and was able to take a couple dribbles and beat Megan Roberson (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) going to her right. Roberson (5-4-2) made the start for the Mountaineers and made four saves on the day.

Appalachian answered the Samford goal relatively quickly in the 17th minute when Samantha Childress (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) netted her eighth goal of the season off of an assist from Jane Cline (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). Childress fired a rocket that snuck into the upper right 90 on a beautiful shot to score the equalizer.

Melissa Montgomery (4-1-1) got the start for the Bulldogs and made three saves. The remaining minutes in the first half would be scoreless as both teams would head into the locker room at halftime knotted at 1-1.

It wasn’t until the 89th minute of the game when Samford was able to get the go ahead goal. Amanda Abbott found herself open dribbling into the box. Abbott took a shot that hit the post, but Malcanisha Kelley was there to tap in the goal to put Samford up 2-1 with just over a minute left.

The Mountaineers wouldn’t be able to answer and their five game unbeaten streak in conference play would be snapped. Samford outshot Appalachian by a 12-8 tally, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on target.

The Apps will return to the pitch at Appalachian Soccer Stadium on Friday when they host Wofford. Kick off for that game is at 7 p.m.
