Ninety-four minutes and two seconds into the game on Sunday afternoon, Samantha Childress made a good weekend a great weekend when she headed in the golden goal off of a Jaclyn Nieradka corner

kick in the first overtime at Davidson to prevail 2-1.

The Mountaineers (5-4-2, 2-0-2) remain unbeaten in Southern Conference play this season and capped off a weekend of good results on the road. Appalachian beat conference foe Georgia Southern 3-1 on Friday night and turned around to get the win at Davidson in overtime.

The Wildcats (3-7-3, 2-2-0) got the scoring started early on with a goal from Sarah Tuggle in the sixth minute of the game. The assist was attributed to Ashley Finke who crossed the ball into the box and allowed Tuggle to chip shot it to the far post.

Megan Roberson, starting keeper for the Mountaineers, made four saves big saves on the day to move to 4-3-2 on the season.

It would not take the Mountaineers long to respond. In the 19th minute, Julia Holz dribbled through three different defenders and blasted her fifth goal of the season to net the equalizer for App State and notch the score at 1-1.

No more scoring would take place in the remaining 71 minutes of regulation. Davidson would outshoot Appalachian 14-10 with the Mountaineers holding the advantage with shots on goal by a tally of 7-5. The Mountaineers would produce four corner kicks and made one of them count in overtime.

In the first overtime, Nieradka took a corner kick and sent the ball into the box where Childress would turn her head into a lethal weapon and send the Mountaineers back home to Boone on a high note. The goal for Childress was her sixth of the season, which out performs her freshman season in 2012 when she scored five goals.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Friday when they host Chattanooga for women’s soccer alumni weekend. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
