Well, it was nice while it lasted. The Watauga High volleyball team was riding a three-game winning streak, and things were looking up for a team that's experienced an inconsistent season.

But the inconsistency returned Thursday night as the Pioneers (12-7) were upended by Mountain Heritage 3-1 in a non-conference game down in Burnsville, N.C. The Cougars bested WHS, 25-14, 17-25, 26-24, 25-17. Despite the loss, WHS coach Kris Hagaman remains optomistic about her team.

"I am very proud of the fact that win or lose our girls (JV and Varsity) always play with integrity an are respectful of their opponents," she said.

Sarah Combs led WHS with 19 assists; Whitney Dunnigan had 18 assists and 11 digs. Rebecca Hayes led the charge on the front line with a team-leading 12 kills, four aces, and five blocks; Meredith Farthing had nine kills, Sarah Petersen had eight kills, and Sydney Farthing had a team-leading 15 digs in the loss.

WHS won the junior varsity game by identical scores of 25-23. The Pioneers were led by Alexis Villarosa with three kills and two blocks. Callie Idol had four blocks; Reina Marze and Savannah Rusher had four aces apiece.

The Pioneers return home to play Patton in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game. The Pioneers nailed down the No.4 seed in the league with a win over Hibriten Wednesday night. The Pioneers are currently the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in conference play. They can clinch that top seed with a win over South Caldwell Monday, October 14 at Lentz-Eggers Gym. That will also be Senior Night. The state playoffs begin Saturday, October 19, and WHS would host that first-round game.
