It was inevitable. The Watauga High girl's tennis team has practically owned the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference dating back to the late 1990's. And the Pioneers didn't waste any time nailing down another
conference championship Wednesday night.
The Pioneers (10-3 overall; 7-0 NW3A/4A Conference), riding a six-match winning streak, blasted Hibriten 8-1 in Lenior, N.C. The match was tied 1-1, when the Pioneers took over.
Nicole Fox broke the tie with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Monica Barlow of the Panthers at No.3 singles. And the Pioneers coasted from there. Kelsi Kanoy at No.4 singles, Liz Clark at No.5 and Annika Davidson closed out singles play with three consecutive wins, giving WHS a commanding 5-1 lead and clinching the match and the conference title.
But there were some anxious moments. Clark defeated Ally Johnson of the Panthers, 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 in the tiebreaker; Davidson defeated Bren Woods of Hibriten by winning her tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-6 (TB 3-7), 10-6.
The seeding meeting for the NW3A/4A Conference qualifier will be on Saturday. The Class 4A qualifier will be at South Caldwell High; the Class 3A qualifier will be at Hickory. The state dual team playoffs begin October 15. The Pioneers, the No.1 seed from the NW3A/4A Conference, will take on the No.1 seed from the Mountain Athletic 3A/4A Conference.
The Class 4A Western Regional will be held October 18-19 at Cornelius-Hough High School; the state championships will be October 25-26 at a site to be determined.
