Mansure, Vandenberg Pace WHS In Pre-Conference Meet PDF Print

Watuaga High junior Kathleen Mansure won her third race of the season on Wednesday afternoon at a Pre-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet at Freedom High in Morganton, N.C.

Mansure crossed the finish line in 20:21, besting the field by 43 seconds. Elizabeth Robinson of Fred T. Foard came in second place in 21:04. The Pioneers had three runners in the top ten and six runners in the top 20.

That effort allowed WHS to win the meet with 39 points; Fred T. Foard finished in second place just three points off the pace with a team score of 42.

Lily Weeks and Celia Jackson of the Pioneers both cracked the top ten; Weeks was seventh (22:03) and Jackson finished eighth (22:11). Lauren Welsh of WHS was 14th (23:29), Lynde Wangler was 15th (23:37), Sophia Prisco was 18th (23:58).

Will Vandenberg turned in a third-place finish in the boy's race as he crossed the finish line in 17:25. But he was WHS' only top-ten finisher. The Pioneers, however, did have six runners in the top 20 and finished second as a team with 53 points. Fred T. Foard won the meet by nosing out WHS with 48 points.

Broderick Bauguess of Fred T. Foard won the boy's race in 17:00. He nosed out Dylan Matthewson of South Caldwell, who finished a very close second. Matthew Osborne of the Pioneers was 11th (18:43), Jacob Soule of WHS was 12th (18:53), Zach Styron of the Pioneers was 13th (19:13), Andrew Harrelson of WHS was 14th (19:20), and freshman Grant Pilkington of th e Pioneers was 18th (19:45).

The WHS boys and girls travel to Charlotte for the Wendy's Invitational on Saturday.
