At least that's what it feels like if your Watauga High boy's soccer coach Woody McKay. The Pioneers, who find themselves in a heated battle for first place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference with Freedom, settled for a 1-1 tie with the Patriots Monday night.
Yaret Regino scored the game's first goal early in the first half off a scramble. The Patriots (5-1-1 NW3A/4A Conference) made it stand up until the midway point of the second half. Chase Palm, who has seen spot duty on the varsity this season, tied things up with his third goal of the season. He scored off a cross by Logan Raichle.
"Things got jumbled up on that goal, but Chase pushed it in," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "We have a share of the lead in the conference, and that's all that matters right now."
The tie also leaves WHS and FHS in a two-way tie for first place. St. Stephens lost a game in the standings Monday night as the Indians (4-2-1 league play) were bested by Fred T. Foard, 2-0. The win moves the Tigers (5-2 in league play) into sole possession of third place, and just one-half game behind the Pioneers and Patriots for first place.
The Pioneers will host the Patriots at Jack Groce Stadium on Senior Night, October 23. WHS returns home to play Hibriten Wednesday night. FHS defeated WHS in the junior varsity game, 2-1. It's the first time the WHS JV team (10-1-1) has lost all season. Freddie Aguilera scored for the Pioneers; David King picked up the assist.
