ASU Wraps Up Wake Forest Invitational PDF Print

Jessica Thaggard advanced to the fifth-place match and Appalachian State University women's tennis picked up nine total wins at the Wake Forest Invitational over the weekend.

 

 

Thaggard picked up an opening-round win over Isabella Fernandez of Stetson (6-1, 6-0) in C Flight singles before falling to Winthrop's Caitlin Cridland in the second round by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 final. Appalachian's lone senior was able to rebound with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Barbora Lazarova of Elon to advance to the fifth-place match (only championship and third-place matches were played).

 

In the A Flight bracket, Clare Cox suffered an opening round loss to Elon's Jordan Johnston (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) before picking up a win in the consolation bracket against Courtney Wild of Ball State (7-5, 6-1). Cox would see her run come to an end in the next round with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to UNCG's Steph Falcon.

 

Gabrielle Wreder dropped her opening match in B Flight singles, but rebounded to pick up a hard-fought 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 win over UNCG's Jamie Grinberg in the consolation bracket before falling by a 6-0, 6-1 score to Giulia Andreazza of ETSU.

 

Mackenzie LaSure dropped her opening-round match in C Flight singles to UNCG's Yasmin Franco but came back with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Charlotte's Macy Vonderschmidt in the consolation rounds. LaSure's run came to an end in the second round of consolation play with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Sarah Stein of Davidson.

 

In D Flight action, Sarah King fell to Bethany Moore of Ball State (6-1, 6-1) before bowing out to Elon's Tolley Rice (6-4, 6-1) in the consolation bracket. McKayla Zupan dropped her two matches in E Flight singles by scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Megan Mullen dropped her first match in the E Flight bracket before picking up a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win in the second round of the consolation bracket.

 

Carson Shell rounded out the Mountaineers' competitors in singles play by picking up a 6-1, 6-1 opening-round win over Courtney McCray of Davidson before dropping her second match by a 6-3, 6-3 final and advancing to the third-place match (which was not played) in F Flight singles.

 

In doubles action, the duo of Cox/Zupan dropped its first two matches before rebounding with a win in the late consolation rounds. Wreder/LaSure were bounced after dropping their first two doubles matches while, in B Flight action, the team of Mullen/Thaggard finished with an 0-3 record.

 

The Apps finished up doubles play in C Flight action, where the duo of King/Shell received a first-round bye before dropping its final two matches. Appalachian State returns to action from Oct. 17-21 at the ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill.
