|Catamounts Down Mountaineers In SoCon Opener|

Appalachian State University volleyball dropped a 3-1 match in its first Southern Conference contest of the season to Western Carolina Thursday night at the Ramsey Center.
The Mountaineers (9-7, 0-1 SoCon), despite winning the third set, were unable to rally to beat the Catamounts in their first meeting of the season. The squads will meet again in Boone on Oct. 27.
The first set featured 11 ties with Appalachian leading 23-22 before the Catamounts stormed the lead to win the set, 25-23.
A thrilling second set was similar to the first, with the score tied nine different times and the lead changing four times. Appalachian took a 25-24 lead before Western Carolina came back to win the set 28-26.The Mountaineers seemed to find an edge in the third, scoring seven straight points to make the score 23-14. Appalachian closed out the 25-16 set victory with a kill from Lindsey Sauls (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East).
The Black & Gold would not continue to rally as they fell behind in the fourth set and the Catamounts never looked back. Western Carolina never lost the lead and took the fourth set, 25-17, to win the match 3-1.
Lauren Gray (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) paced App State with 16 kills on the night while Jess Keller (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) and Sauls each tallied 12. Meghan Mahoney (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley) notched 36 digs and Paige Brown (Overland Park, Kan./James Academy) finished with 50 assists.
Jordan Timmerman notched a match-high 20 kills for the Catamounts while Caitlin Piechota finished with 11. Morgan Cochran tallied 38 digs on the night and Christina Nazario had 43 assists.
Appalachian State hit just .164 on the attack in comparison to Western Carolina’s .194 attack percentage. The Mountaineers finished with nine blocks on the night while the Catamounts finished with 12.
Appalachian will return to action tomorrow night at the Holmes Center when they take on Davidson for a 7 p.m. match.
