The Watauga High girl's tennis team remained unblemished in Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play with an 8-1 victory over Fred T. Foard at the WHS Tennis Courts Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers (8-3 overall; 5-0 NW3A/4A Conference), riding a four-match winning streak, are just two wins away from clinching another conference title. WHS has dominated the NW3A/4A conference dating back to 1999, when Ron Adams took over the program.
The Pioneers also gave their No.2 seed, freshman Meghan Smith the day off, and they still dominated the Tigers. Meredith Smith led the charge by knocking off Maggie Gettys of the Tigers in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No.1 singles. Nicole Fox followed with a straight sets win against Taylor Sigmon, 6-1, 6-1.
The Pioneers built a 6-0 lead in singles play and clinched the match. The only real challenge in singles play occurred at No.3 singles. Liz Clark staved off a determined effort by Rachel Berry of the Tigers, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 in the tiebreaker.
Smith teamed up with Kelsi Kanoy for a win at No.1 doubles; Fox and Davidson picked up a win at No.2 doubles. The Pioneers travel to Freedom Monday; the Pioneers will celebrate Senior Day next Wednesday at home against Hibriten.
