The Watauga High boy's soccer team kept its share of first place Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over Fred T. Foard in double overtime at Jack Groce Stadium.

Logan Raichle scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute of the second overtime period. Cam Linnville picked up the assist on the play as the Pioneers dropped the Tigers into fourth place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference standings. Freedom kept pace with WHS as the Patriots, who play the Pioneers Monday night in Morganton, blanked Hickory 3-0 at the Catawba River Soccer Complex.

"We've been playing together for a long time," said Linnville, who will be featured at halftime of Friday night's Homecoming football game between the Pioneers and St. Stephens. "We know each other very well. That's why our communication on the field is so good. It's been a lot of fun playing with these guys. And we still have a lot of games left."

The Pioneers and the Patriots are both 5-1 and tied for first in the NW3A/4A; St. Stephens (4-1-1 in league play) moved into third place by knocking off Hibriten 3-1 Wednesday night.

"We controlled most of the play during the course of the game," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "But they did a good job defensively marking us up. We finally got one to go in. It was a nice play between Cam and Logan to close it out."

WHS won the junior varsity game, 2-1.
