In what was a must win for a team in dire need of one, the Watauga High volleyball team did just that on Wednesday night. The Pioneers (10-6 overall; 4-5 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) knocked off Fred T.
Foard 3-1 at Lentz-Eggers Gym in a NW3A/4A match up.
The Pioneers defeated Fred T. Foard 25-8, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21. The win also gives WHS a split of the season series between the schools. The Tigers defeated WHS in their frst meeting on September 5 in Newton.
Whitney Dunnigan and Sarah Combs paced the Pioneers as they combined for 39 points. Dunnigan finished with 20; Combs had 19. Rebecca Hayes and Sarah Petersen controlled the net as they combined for 26 kills.
Hayes finished with 13 kills, ten blocks and two aces; Petersen had 13 kills. Abby Hicks and Sydney Farthing turned in a strong defensive effort against the Tigers. Hicks finished with 18 digs and two aces; Farthing had 16 digs. Sierra Hill had six blocks.
WHS is tied for fourth with Patton. but Patton owns the tiebreaker after beating WHS in their first meeting down in Morganton on September 11. Foard, with the loss, falls to 6-3 and in third place, two games back of Hickory and three behind league-leading St. Stephens. Emily Simpson had eight kills and two blocks for Foard, with Kaliegh Mathis adding 16 assists and Nina Cline 12.
WHS won the junior varsity game, 2-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-20). Savannah Rusher had 15 assists; Reina Marze had 12 assists; Tayler McCune chipped in with six kills, 13 digs and two aces; Callie Idol had nine kills. The Pioneers play at Freedom Monday night.
