Watauga High senior Jake Chasteen has made a verbal commitment to attend Appalachian State
Univeristy next fall to continue his soccer career.
Chasteen, who backboned WHS to the Western Regionals last fall, has posted or shared four shutouts for the Pioneers in goal this season. WHS has been extremely stingy, giving up just nine goals in 13 games.
Chasteen was an all-Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, All-Region, All-State selection last fall. He was WHS' first all-state selection since Ben Robertson earned the honor in 2008. He was also WHS' 33rd all-state selection in school history (18 for the boys and 15 for the girls).
Goalkeeper Adam Laney is the only two-time all-state selection for the WHS boys in 1995 and 1996; Ashley Rex of the WHS girls was named all-state three times (2000-02); Erin Koch and Lindsey Koch each won the honor twice (in 2003 and 2004).
The Pioneers (12-1 overall; 4-1 NW3A/4A Conference) have a huge game at home tonight against Fred T. Foard. The Pioneers, the Tigers and Freedom are all tied for first place. The junior varsity match begins at 5 p.m.; the varsity match begins at 6:30 p.m.
